(Santa Barbara – March 13, 2013) – The incredible children’s art network (iCAN) will host the unveiling of student-made mural, Our Bright School and Our Peaceful View of Santa Barbara, at the McKinley Elementary School cafeteria on Tuesday, March 19th from 8:45-10:00 A.M. Student Artists from iCAN’s Visual Arts Program at McKinley have contributed approximately 450 hours over the last year an a half toward completing the 5’x 20’ mosaic mural.
This permanent installation captures the creative process of McKinley Elementary Student Artists working collaboratively with mosaic muralist, Betsy Gallery, and iCAN Teaching Artist, Angela Lang. Students from each 5th and 6th grade class designed the mural, which depicts a bird’s eye view of the Santa Barbara landscape, with iconic landmarks including the Santa Barbara Friendship Fountain, traditional Chumash motifs, Stearns Warf, and McKinley Elementary School.
The completion of this mural was made possible through generous contributions from local businesses, NS Ceramics and DD Ford Construction. NS Ceramics donated 185 square feet of 1” vitreous tiles to the intricately designed mural. DD Ford Construction provided a custom-cut plywood base and industrial-grade wall cleats to safely hang the mural. Five DD Ford employees then volunteered their time to lift and mount mural, weighing over a quarter ton.
In addition to these contributions, iCAN would like to thank Santa Barbara Unified School District Assistant Superintendent, Emilio Handall, McKinley Elementary School Principal, Tia Binkley, and the administrative staff at McKinley Elementary School for supporting the process and placement of this special work of art for students to enjoy.
The unveiling will be hosted by McKinley Principal, Tia Blickley, and attended by Assistant Superintendent, Emilio Handall, guest muralist, Betsy Gallery, and representatives from DD Ford Construction. Over 120 students who participated in creating the mural will make up the audience and three select students will do the honors in revealing the mural.
The mission of the incredible children’s art network (iCAN) is to bring high quality arts programs to children in Santa Barbara County, particularly those least likely to receive them. iCAN provides each student at McKinley Elementary School with high quality, in-school visual art instruction as one of the five campuses served in Santa Barbara.
