Over 200 students and teaching artists gathered at Franklin Elementary School on Friday, July 19, for a day of workshops and performances hosted by the Incredible Children’s Art Network (iCAN). The iCAN Music Program partnered with the Los Angeles Philharmonics’ Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA) and was joined by guests from the Youth Orchestra of Salinas (YOSAL). All three programs are modeled after the widely successful el Sistema movement, which originates from Venezuela and utilizes music education as a vehicle for social change. A fundamental element of the el Sistema way is the use of orchestra to exemplify a strong, thriving community. The iCAN Music Festival embodied this trait, successfully bridging three communities of students and teachers to function as one holistic ensemble.

The iCAN Music Program begins its third full year in the fall with over 120 students at Franklin Elementary School and they look forward to future collaborations that will provide high quality learning opportunities for their students and continue to positively impact our community.
